Make Your Valentine’s Party Healthy with These Treat Ideas from Action for Healthy Kids

Valentine’s Day parties often focus on cookies, cupcakes, and lots and lots of candy. Action for Healthy Kids, an Illinois PTA cooperating agency, has some ideas to help room parents and other party planners bring in some healthy treats to their Valentines Day Child Friendly Healthy Treat With Heart-shaped FrValentine’s Day parties. The ideas include two snacks that kids can help make themselves, Love Bugs and Melon Pops, and a Love Potion Smoothie to help wash them down. They’ve also created a Pinterest page focused on fun activities and other healthy snacks for Valentine’s Day.

While party treats generally do not fall under the new Smart Snacks guidelines because they are not sold, many school districts have implemented policies to require healthy celebrations or to avoid food or beverages for celebrations due to food allergies. Be sure to check with your school on what foods are allowed at classroom parties, and check out National PTA’s Guide to Smart Snacks in Schools for information on the new Smart Snacks rules and how they may affect your PTA.
